Bears are a favorite subject of mine, to paint and abstract. I've seen them in Yosemite from a distance and, accidentally, up close. The accidental sighting occurred while I was leading a fairly large group of Yosemite National Park visitors, in a Plein Air painting session. We'd set up in Cook's Meadow, where the panorama offers views of many of the park greats: Yosemite Falls, Half Dome and the Arches. Anyway, as I was slashing away at a demonstration canvas, I became aware of movement on my left, through my perriferral vision. I shifted my attention in that direction, as a 500 lb., blonde, black bear climbed up out of the tall golden grass and onto the path, just 10' from where we were gathered. It stopped, turned to study us, then decided we were of little interest, and headed into the brush on the other side of the trail. What beautiful, powerful, magnificent creatures bears are! I truly respect them, but prefer to do so from at least 200 feet away.
