Artist's Comments
I've painted the Ahwahnee several times, from various angles, over the years, but the structure is so large and complex and the surrounding foliage keeps you so close to the hotel, it's impossible, from the outside, to tell how the whole thing fits together. Staying in the hotel doesn't get you any closer to understanding the configuration of all the complex parts, as visitors are closed off from many of the upper floors and patios. I'd attempted abstracting the whole thing several times, leaving my easel set-up in one location to wander around the outside of the hotel, taking mental notes, only to realize I'd forgotten how an important detail fit the whole, when I returned to my painting.
During a Google search, I happened upon the plans of the original structure, which included a top view floor plan. Finally armed with an understanding of the hotel layout, I began this abstraction.
