When I was growing up, my maternal grandfather, Francisco (Frank) Gomez, owned a business downtown in Los Angeles on South San Pedro Street. He spent his working weeks there, along with my grandmother, Ruth, designing, fabricating and selling beautiful custom quilted bedspreads and draperies to high end hotels across the nation. Because my Mom's mother and father were downtown, we spent a lot of time there and were familiar with all the local haunts in the area. With its sawdust covered floors, ancient waitresses and jars of purple pickled eggs on the counters, Philippe's Restaurant was a family favorite for meals, whenever we visited. They claim to have invented the French Dip Sandwich.
